Secrets of Centenarians: The Remarkable Lifestyle of 103-Year-Old Liang Gengshi

At the impressive age of 103, Liang Gengshi exhibits an astonishing vitality — not only is she none the worse for wear in terms of hearing and sight, but she also communicates with remarkable clarity and possesses an exceptional memory. Her son, the 72-year-old Mr. Liang, recently divulged to reporters the intriguing “four secrets” to his mother’s long and healthy life.

An Unconventional Diet: Rich in Fat and Sweets

Contrary to most elderly individuals who adhere to a vegetarian and low-sugar diet, Madam Liang goes against the grain. She has an affinity for high-energy foods, with a particular fondness for fatty meats. Moreover, she has a penchant for sweets, often preferring her tea with a touch of sugar for added comfort. Madam Liang also practices an unusual culinary ritual: starting her meals with soup before moving on to other dishes.

A Deliberate Facial Regimen

Each morning, Madam Liang takes her time with her facial routine, often exceeding an hour, her face covered with a towel. Interestingly, she prefers rinsing her eyes with cold water several times a day, while reserving hot water for cleansing her face. Today, she boasts good hearing and eyesight, even demonstrating the finesse required to thread a needle and sew.

A Leisurely Morning Ritual

Over the years, Madam Liang has nurtured a fondness for her bed. She spends a considerable amount of time lounging before rising, sometimes extending to an hour. Post-rise, her routine involves a thorough face wash followed by a careful and meticulous haircombing session. It is noteworthy that her hair remains black at the roots, only beginning to gray after growing more than half a centimeter.

A Temperament of Calm and Equanimity

Naturally inclined to live without conflict, Madam Liang approaches life and even familial disputes with dispassion, maintaining her routine of eating and sleeping undisturbed. Mr. Liang recalls never witnessing his mother in anger or losing her temper, a stark contrast to his late father, who was quick to anger and indulged in drinking and smoking — habits that may have contributed to his earlier passing in 1968.

Five Generations Under One Roof and a Social Butterfly

Madam Liang enjoys the unique pleasure of living alongside five generations under a single roof. She’s known for her sociability and fondness for conversation. She moves about without assistance, her gaze still sharp. She recounted to reporters, with evident pride, having lived a life remarkably free of illness. Even at the ripe age of 96, she adventured on the ropeway cable car, bravely accompanied by her son.
